Overview of OptiKey Benefits

It is designed to be used with a low-cost eye-tracking device to bring keyboard, mouse, and speech control to people with motor and speech limitations, such as people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) / Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

OptiKey was written to challenge the outrageously expensive, unreliable, and difficult-to-use AAC (alternative and augmentative communication) products on the market. It is, therefore, fully open-source and free.

The application includes an on-screen keyboard that serves as the interface through which users interact with their PCs. It features a standard keyboard layout for the letters and offers multiple quick-access features for enabling speech or mouse control and toggling numbers or symbols.

Using the keyboard is very intuitive. Users can point their mouse cursor over the keys or buttons physically or by using eye-tracking devices that map their eyesight position in relation to their screens. Once the mouse cursor is paused over a preferred key, a small timer icon confirms the selection after a short period.
